TURKISH CITIZENS’ OPINIONS ABOUT SYRIAN REFUGEES (EXAMPLE OF KONYA REGİON)

Abstract: This study was carried out to examine Turkish citizens’ attitudes towards Syrian refugees. The sample group of 400 individuals was randomly chosen from Konya city centre in 2017. The data were obtained using the “Attitude towards Syrian Refugees Scale”. The study found that sample group haven’t got negative opinions on Syrian refugees and they support moderate solutions proposed. Nevertheless, they are indecisive about having positive opinions on Syrian refugees and helping the refugees; majority of them don’t agree with the policies of the Republic of Turkey and the opinions of the general public in this regard. Also among the participants; who are elder, married, parents and women exhibit more sensitive attitudes towards the Syrian refugees. However, as the number of individuals increases in their households have more negative approach towards asylum seekers. Solution-oriented suggestions were provided on the process in line with the data obtained.
