An Examination of Marriage Anxiety Among University Youth

From a historical perspective, the continuity of humanity and society has been sustained through the institution of the family. In this regard, examining young people’s attitudes toward marriage and family formation is of particular importance, as societies maintain their continuity through younger generations establishing families and raising children. Therefore, young people’s decisions to delay marriage or to avoid it altogether may pose a potential risk to social continuity. Although the decision to marry is influenced by multiple factors, financial conditions and expectations about the future have become increasingly influential in recent years. Accordingly, this study aims to examine the relationship between financial well-being, hopelessness, and marriage anxiety among university students. The sample consists of undergraduate students enrolled in the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences at Hacettepe University. Data were collected from 364 students through an online survey. Relationships among variables were analyzed using the Pearson product–moment correlation test. The PROCESS Macro was used for the effect analysis. The findings indicate statistically significant relationships between marriage anxiety and hopelessness, marriage anxiety and financial well-being, and hopelessness and financial well-being. In addition, financial well-being was found to mediate the relationship between marriage anxiety and hopelessness among university students.
