The First Industrial Revolution not only contributed to the field of management but also created major impacts in nearly every aspect of life. Steam-powered machines were invented and new factories were established; as a result, employment increased and migration from rural areas to cities accelerated, leading to urbanization. However, Turing this period, enterprises also develere cerhtin internal dynamics. Issues such as working conditions and relationships, and managers’ perceptions of workers, emerged as topics requiring consideration. Toward the end of the period, Taylor contributed to businesses by introducing the principles of scientific management. Nevertheless, Taylor focused his contributions on improving organizational efficiency and largely ignored the desires and needs of employees. This study includes a Taylorism-based analysis of working conditions and relationships within enterprises during the First Industrial Revolution, supported by the literature, through the identification of working life in the period via visual materials. In the analysis, semiotics— a qualitative research method—was applied. First, the elements in the photographs were categorized under the headings of sign, signifier, and signified in accordance with Barthes’ definition of semiotic analysis; subsequently, analyses including denotation and connotation were conducted. While denotation includes concrete elements perceived similarly by everyone, connotation consists of interpretations made by the researcher with the support of the literature. The analyses demonstrate that during the First Industrial Revolution, workers labored under conditions far from humane standards. Moreover, they reveal that young children were also involved in working life and were employed in all kinds of jobs, regardless of whether they were easy or difficult, risky or non-risky. Similarly, women were observed to be employed in heavy labor, and it is also evident that no occupational safety measures were taken for workers engaged in dangerous and risky jobs during the period. Therefore, it is observed that businesses prioritize operational efficiency over their employees, only making necessary adjustments to increase production, and as a result, they contribute to the emergence of Taylorism.
