Abstract

Presenteeism is defined as employees’ attending to work even though they are sick and thus being unproductive. This study aims to examine the opinions of hotel employees on presenteesim.  Because of this, the casuses and effects of presenteesim were handled in an interpretative way through the eyes of hotel employees. The data were gathered via in depth interviews with 10 employees working in hotel establishments in Eskişehir. The results of the study indicate that participants go through presenteeism and the severity of their sickness affects their attendance. The results also show that the employees experience presenteeism because of reasons such as the lack of substitutes, job insecurity and pressure from superiors. It was also found that employees who experience presenteeism also suffer from reduced productivity and concentration and that support from superiors has a relaxative effect on presenteeism. It is thought that this study will inspire further studies on the subject and serve as a guideline for administrators in hotel in protecting the health of employees and establishing employee satisfaction.
