Abstract

The aim of this study is to reveal the interpersonal communication competencies of communication faculty students by examining them with various variables. The study was planned in a quantitative survey model. Approval was obtained from Gazi University Ethics Committee. The study group was determined by convenience sampling method.  The study consisted of 820 university students, 410 female and 410 male. General information form and Interpersonal Communication Disposition Inventory were used as data collection tools. The researcher applied the Interpersonal Communication Competence Inventory (ICCI) to determine the four-factor structure of interpersonal communication competencies (listening skill, social relaxation skill, empathy skill, self-expression skill). The data were analyzed with SPSS program. The Cronbanch Alpha value in this study was 0.81. The results showed that there was no significant difference in terms of gender, parental union, whether the family structure was nuclear or traditional, socio-economic level, level of social support and number of siblings. Significant differences were found in the social comfort skill dimension, empathy skill dimension and interpersonal communication competencies in defining family structure.
