A STUDY INTO THE BEHAVİOURS OF ELDERLY CONSUMERS OVER SHOPPİNG

The study was carried out to examine the behaviours of elderly consumers over shopping with 76 elderly consumers living in the rest houses and some other 74 elderly consumers living with their families in Istanbul. Of the elderly people, 23.7 % were women while 76.3 % were men and out of those living with their family, 41.9 % were women whereas 58.1 were men. 47.4 % of the elderly people living in rest houses and 44.7 % of those living with their families were in the age group of 70 -79. 28.9 % of the elderly people living in rest houses and 31.1 % of those living with their families expressed that they always had a shopping list before going shopping. Those living with their families had a higher score (2.257) compared to the ones living in rest houses (1.724) in the item of “I prefer buying imitative products providing that they are cheap”. The difference between the fact that elderly people prefer buying imitative products providing that they are cheap and the place inhabited was found statistically significant (p<0.05) 86.8 % of the elderly people living in rest houses and 51.4 % of those living with their families expressed that they never did door to door shopping. The elderly living with their families had a higher mean score (1.770) compared to the ones living in rest houses (1.171) in the item of “I do door to door shopping” and the difference between the groups was statistically significant (p<.0.05).
