AN Analysis on Türkiye’s Foreign Trade in Essential Oils And its Revealed Competitive Advantage (2005-2023)

Essential oils are used in many areas such as food, cosmetics, aromatherapy, cleaning, plant protection and animal nutrition. In recent years, there has been a huge increase in the use of essential oil products all over the world. In this study, the competitive power in the trade of significant essential oils obtained from orange, lemon, mint, thyme, rose and lavender was examined. Within the scope of the examination carried out using the revealed comparative advantage (RCA) model developed by Balassa (1965), it was determined that Türkiye has no competitive power in the essential oils obtained from citrus fruits and mint. On the other hand, it has been determined that there has been a decline in the competitive power of foreign trade of essential oils obtained from plants other than citrus fruits and mint, such as rose and lavender, in recent years. The results imply that the potential for essential oil production, especially from orange and lemon, has not been utilized and that there is a deficiency in the raw material production of essential oils such as rose and lavender oil. Within the scope of the findings obtained, it is necessary to encourage the establishment of facilities for the production of essential oils from orange and lemon, and to increase the production area for rose, thyme and lavender oil. In addition, it is suggested that exporting essential oils as processed products instead of raw materials will provide more benefits to the Turkish economy in terms of employment and foreign exchange income.
