Abstract

The article focuses on the establishment, development, moral principles and activities of The Green Crescent Society. The study is based on Republic Archives documents, Green Crescent regulations, newspapers, works of Doctor Mazhar Osman’s and Doctor Fahrettin Kerim Gokay, Green Crescent Journal, brochures and research works. Green Crescent was founded on 5 March 1920 under the name of Hilal-i Ahdar. In 1934 with the Decision of Council of the Ministers, it gained the status of association in the public interest. The first General President of the Society is Professor Doctor Mazhar Osman Usman and the second General President is Professor Doctor Fahrettin Kerim Gokay. Fahrettin Kerim became General Secretary of Society and Youth Branch Chair during his teacher Mazhar Osman’s General President. He was the Honorary Chairman of the Society even when he was the Governor and Mayor of Istanbul. The works of the Youth Branch had been appreciated both at home and abroad. Green Crescent became a member of the International Anti-alcoholism Association on behalf of Turkey and It was represented in Congresses. It tried to make its voice by Green Crescent Day and Grape Day Celebrations, Green Crescent Badge, seminars, conferences and congresses. Its aim is to prevent the use of addictive substances in the country, support raising healthy generations and to support moral education in this context.
