Abstract

The purpose of this study is to seek an answer to the question of whether socioeconomic status of parents has a significant effect on types of high schools that their children attend. The study is based on descriptive survey model. To collect data, a questionnaire designed in accordance with the purpose was utilized. Considering the findings obtained from the research, a significant relationship was found between monthly income of parents and types of high schools where their children studied. Likewise, it was identified that educational background of parents also had an impact on schools that children attended. In addition, a significant relationship was determined between professions of parents and schools of their children. Regarding this, it can be stated that as parents’ level of income and education increases, their children study at academically more successful high schools. Moreover, it can be concluded that children of civil servants mostly attend Science and Anatolian high schools whereas those of workers and self-employed parents mostly study at Vocational and Technical or Religious high schools.
